According to the decree-law, with this measure, the Government intends to "ensure that the lack of economic resources does not compromise the respective therapy".
"Ageing increases the predisposition to developing various pathologies and, consequently, the need to resort to medication", states the diploma, which comes into force on June 1.
This additional co-payment was previously set at 50%.
The measure covers around 145,000 beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI), according to the information released when the measure was approved by the Council of Ministers.
This change - a joint measure of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security and the Ministry of Health - will cost 10.4 million euros.
This measure is monitored by Infarmed, which will assess its effectiveness and identify "possible situations of fraud or waste".
The diploma also provides that the National Authority for Medicines and Health Products sends the Government a report on the implementation of this decree-law every three months.
The CSI is a monthly support paid in cash to elderly people in poverty. Citizens over 66 years of age with an annual income of less than or equal to 6,608 euros are eligible. In the case of a couple, this income must be less than or equal to 11,564 euros.
On the day the measure was approved by the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister announced that the Government will also increase the CSI reference value by 50 euros from June and eliminate the income of children as an exclusion factor criterion.
