The information is included in the study on the costs of retail payment instruments published by the regulator, which indicates that economic agents made 5.7 billion payments in Portugal in 2022, representing a 2% increase compared to 2017.
The Banco de Portugal indicates that around 43% of transactions were made with cash, totalling 2.4 billion payments.
"This number reflects a 28% decrease in the use of cash compared to 2017. On the other hand, operations with payment cards and transfers (credit and immediate) increased by 60% and 35% compared to 2017, respectively", it reveals.
The data from the banking supervisor reveals that "2.6 billion payments were made with payment cards and 390 million with transfers, values that correspond to 46% and 7% of the total, respectively".
In 2022, transfers amounted to 1,749.8 billion euros and represented 86% of the total value of payments, four percentage points (pp) more than in 2017.
According to the Banco de Portugal, direct debits and payment cards were responsible for 2% and 6% of the value of payments in 2022.
However, "cash was the instrument most used to make low-value payments", although it represented only 1% of the total value of payments made in 2022.
"Checks were the instrument whose use decreased the most in value between 2017 and 2022: on average, 8% per year".
"Even so, they represented 4% of the total value of payments in 2022".
