"The membership rate of 90-100% led to the closure of museums and monuments from north to south of the country, such as the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, Royal Riding Hall, Guimarães Castle and Ducal Palace, Sagres Fortress and Convent of Christ (Tomar), the National Federation of Public and Social Service Workers' Unions (FNSTFPS) said in a statement.

The union points out that "the facilities that are open, by decision of the management, are operating with a much lower number of workers than normal, which compromises the safety and normal functioning" of these spaces.

Previously, in a statement, the FNSTFPS had explained that this 24-hour strike aims to "demand the regularisation of the payment of overtime on holidays, and to reaffirm the need to value the work done on these days, to comply with working hours and their legal limits".

The workers also want their "professional career in surveillance and doorkeeping" to be valued.

"The board of directors of MMP,EPE [Museums and Monuments of Portugal, Public Business Entity] assumed on 3 April that all outstanding payments for overtime and holiday work had already been settled. And, at the same time, it assumed that the regularisation would be carried out during that same month, which did not happen", the federation of unions said in the statement.

The public company Museums and Monuments of Portugal manages 38 national museums and monuments distributed throughout the country.

Contacted by the Lusa agency, a source from MMP's communication department replied, by email, that the public company "concluded, on 6 May, the payment of overtime and holiday work for 2023, following the information reported by the former Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage and by the Regional Directorates for Culture, and transferred to the new public entity".

"The payment of all overtime hours for 2024 reported in accordance by the various museums, monuments and palaces that make up the MMP, until the closing of the May payroll, was completed on 14 May", he added, in response to Lusa.

The same source also said that "the MMP is ensuring the processing of the service provided on holidays under the terms of paragraph 2 of article 165 of the General Law on Public Service Work".
