In a statement released today, the BA reports that in Germany there were 2,723,000 people out of work in May.
"The spring recovery did not really materialize this year. Unemployment and underemployment also fell in May, but not as strongly as in most previous years," said Andrea Nahles, chairwoman of the BA's executive board.
Underemployment, which also takes into account changes in labor policy and short-term incapacity for work, stood at 3,549,000 people in May, according to seasonally adjusted data.
The number of workers on subsidized short-time work ("Kurzarbeit") stood at 219,000 in March - the last month with real data - after 200,000 in February and 189,000 in January.
In May, 865,000 people received unemployment benefits, 98,000 more than a year ago.
In addition, 4,021,000 people, or 7.3% of the working population, received basic social benefits for job seekers in May, 82,000 more than in May 2023.
In May, 702,000 vacancies were registered with the BA, 65,000 fewer than in the same month of 2023.
Between October 2023 and May 2024, 364,000 applicants for a training position registered with the employment centers, 9,000 more than in the same period last year.
In May, 172,000 of these candidates had not yet found a training position or an alternative.
