Train founding member Charlie Colin has died. He was 58.
According to TMZ, the musician’s mother says he died after he slipped and fell in the shower while housesitting for friends in Belgium. It’s unclear exactly when he fell.
TMZ reports that Colin was found by the friends when they returned home from a trip that lasted about five days.
Colin was an original member of Train, which initially consisted of Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Scott Underwood and Jimmy Stafford, and contributed to the group’s first three studio albums, from their self-titled debut (1999) to “My Private Nation” (2003), with “Drops of Jupiter” (2001) sandwiched in between.
The band broke into the Billboard charts with the hit “Meet Virginia” from their second album and went on to win two Grammy Awards: Best Rock Song and Best Arrangement With Vocals for “Drops of Jupiter.”
A Newport Beach, California native and, until recently, the music director for the Newport Beach Film Festival, Colin attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music, where he studied jazz composition and guitar.
He later moved to Los Angeles and joined a band with Hotchkiss, whom he met at Berklee.
They then formed the group the Apostles with Stafford, which led to international gigs and, in 1996, a relocation back to the U.S. to form what would become Train.
With Train, Colin toured the world and achieved great success before leaving the band in 2003 due to struggles with drug addiction.
In more recent years, Colin played with hard rock acts like Slipknot and Puddle of Mudd, and he reunited with Hotchkiss in 2015 to form the band the Painbirds with Tom Luce.
