You've definitely heard that too much sugar can damage your teeth. But what about alcohol—is it really that bad for your pearly whites? Well + Good spoke to dentist Tyler Hales, DDS, to get the scoop.

Turns out, it can be pretty damaging to both your teeth and your gums. "Alcohol can cause dry mouth, which means you have less saliva, which normally acts as a buffer against bacteria and helps deliver nutrients to your teeth to keep them healthy," says Dr. Hales.

"Less saliva makes your mouth more acidic, which can allow bacteria to thrive and cause a host of problems, like cavities," he continues. He notes that there can be some variation in the long-term effects depending on the type of alcohol you're drinking.

"If you're sipping on sugary cocktails, you're upping your risk of developing oral health issues even more. Hard alcohol can be even harsher on your mouth, leading to more severe dry mouth and increasing your risk of oral cancer."
