With the arrival of spring, some typical diseases of the season begin to show signs, such as atopic dermatitis. Also known as eczema, it is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by inflammation, itching, extreme dryness or redness.
Atopic dermatitis "consists of periods of acute phase (crises) with reddish eruptions, forming papules or vesicles, with exudation and crust formation that evolve into scaling lesions in the chronic phase", explains Bayer in a statement. Its incidence has been increasing over the last 40 years and it is currently estimated to affect between 10% and 20% of the pediatric population. "Its onset usually occurs during the first year of life, but in most cases, approximately 60% of children experience a decrease or complete disappearance of the lesions before puberty."
Eczema in children manifests mainly as dry skin, with redness, especially in the skin folds of the arms, elbows, behind the knees, ears, neck, wrists, hands and ankles. In adults, the appearance is similar, but it can affect different areas of the body, such as the face, scalp, shoulders, trunk and neck.
Even so, Bayer recalls that atopic dermatitis crises can be spaced out and controlled, ensuring a better quality of life for those who suffer from this condition. Therefore, investing in daily skin care is a simple but essential action. Namely:
- Moisturizing the skin with appropriate creams is essential to keep the skin barrier intact. Combining moisturizing care with a bath gel suitable for atopic skin can also be a good help;
- Using mild, fragrance-free cleansers should be the choice for those with atopic skin;
- Clothing, as it is in contact with this organ, should be washed with suitable detergents. When drying, avoid placing it outdoors, especially when plant pollination levels are higher;
- Drinking water frequently and avoiding sun exposure are other important prevention tips to avoid the onset of atopic eczema crises;
- When faced with an atopic eczema crisis, or difficult-to-control skin lesions, it is important to consult a dermatologist.
