Ashley Hainsworth, of Bed Kingdom, told Bristol Live that drinking too much water before bed can disrupt sleep and even increase your risk of developing long-term health conditions.
Drinking excess water before bed causes your kidneys to produce more urine, resulting in multiple trips to the bathroom. This can disrupt your natural sleep cycle and, in the long run, damage your health. “Constantly interrupting our sleep cycle, especially due to frequent trips to the bathroom during the night is not just an inconvenience. It poses a serious threat to our overall health,” she warned.

The list of risks is extensive. “It can increase stress levels, impair cognitive function, lead to a weakened immune system and even increase your risk of developing long-term conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”
Hainsworth advises drinking water first thing in the morning and keeping your intake consistent throughout the day. “That way, you’re less likely to feel the need to compensate by overdoing it in the evening,” she says.
She also says it’s best to avoid drinking too much in the two hours leading up to bed “to give your body enough time to process the fluids”.
