A balanced diet isn't the only path to a healthier life. For gastroenterologist Will Bulsiewicz, there are three supplements that have gained relevance and are his allies. However, some care is needed.

According to the doctor, food supplements do not replace the consumption of healthy foods. Will Bulsiewicz recalls that they are a complement. "Supplements are beneficial when they do not compete with food", he emphasizes, in an interview with Business Insider.

"I would never say to take supplements instead of eating a salad or something. Make sure you consume enough fiber and a variety of plants. Then supplement with supplements targeted to achieve a specific health effect," he reinforces.

To the same publication, the gastroenterologist revealed that he is a supporter of vitamin D supplements, as it helps the body absorb calcium and thus improve bone health. However, the substance can be obtained through the consumption of fortified milk, mushrooms and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and trout.

Another supplement consumed by the doctor is precisely omega-3. Bulsiewicz says it contributes to vision and heart health, in addition to helping the fetus develop in the uterus. This active ingredient can be found in nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.

He also mentions that he does not dispense with prebiotics, which are basically undigested carbohydrates that serve as food for probiotics, contributing to their proliferation in the intestine. These substances feed the intestinal bacteria and promote the balance of the microbiota. 

Prebiotics are available in foods such as leeks, onions and kidney beans.
