Three habits that can help you live (much) longer:
- Sleep well. Almost everyone knows that poor quality sleep increases the risk of multiple cardiovascular conditions, as well as depression and, in some cases, cancer. But, in 2023, a study conducted by Harvard Medical School in the United States, concluded that sleeping between seven to nine hours per night, every night, can increase life expectancy by 4.7 years for men and 2.4 years for women;
- Have sex regularly. Another study, mentioned in the book 'Secrets of the Superyoung' by David Weeks, a neuropsychologist, stated that "the stress reduction, increased satisfaction levels and improved sleep that come from regular sex may be enough to add four to seven years to your life";
- Drink plenty of water. Dehydration accelerates the ageing process. For example, in studies conducted with rats, "mild dehydration was enough to reduce life expectancy by six months, which is equivalent to 15 years in human terms".
