Snacking between meals helps to curb hunger, of course, and also helps to restore blood sugar levels, explains doctor Deborah Lee in an interview with the Daily Express. However, it is important to make healthy choices when it comes to snacking. “Snacking on foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt can lead to cravings and reinforce unhealthy eating patterns,” adds the expert.
In general, the list of unhealthy snacks includes all “processed and ultra-processed foods,” she explains. This also applies to other “foods that are high in calories and have little (or no) nutritional value.”

In other words, “common examples of unhealthy snacks include crisps, biscuits, cakes, sweets, chocolate, ice cream and desserts.” According to the expert, these foods are made to “taste divine and to ensure that you want to keep eating them.”
She also explained that these foods can be very addictive for those who like to snack. Citing a study, she explains that “eating processed and ultra-processed foods stimulates the brain’s pleasure centres in exactly the same way as a hit of cocaine.”
Finally, she emphasises that, ideally, snacks between meals should account for “just 10 per cent of your daily calorie intake”. Each snack should contain only between “150 to 200 calories”. Therefore, “opt for snacks that are high in protein, fibre and wholegrains, or fruit and vegetables”.
