We know that leaving the toilet seat up is a common point of contention in many households. However, it turns out that the best option is to put it down, at least while flushing.

On social media platform TikTok, doctor Karan Rajan, a surgeon for the UK’s National Health Service, explains that germs and pathogens can spray onto surfaces that you might later touch with your face, toothbrush or towel. The expert warns that pathogens in the plume could include E. coli, adenovirus and norovirus.

To illustrate his point, he showed footage of neon green pathogens being expelled from a toilet while it was being flushed. He said: “If you don’t shut the lid after you’ve flushed the toilet, you definitely will after watching this.” Referring to an experiment conducted by scientists, Rajan said the contaminated droplets travelled at two metres per second, reaching heights of one and a half metres above the toilet. “Some of the smaller droplets can linger in the air for several minutes,” he added.
