Common mistakes that make towels stiff (and smelly)

Many think fabric softener makes towels feel (even) softer. But unfortunately, it has the opposite effect, warn the experts at Better Homes and Gardens. Why? Because fabric softener buildup actually reduces the absorbency of your towels, they add.
Using too much detergent has a similar effect and can leave towels feeling stiff. And the combination of the two — fabric softener and too much detergent — can leave towels smelling musty, even after they’ve just been washed.
To fix the problem, they suggest trying to wash them with 1/2 cup of white vinegar to remove detergent buildup, as well as fabric softener buildup.
