The eighth edition of the Mental Festival, which reflects on mental health, begins on May 10th in Lisbon, the organization announced today.
This festival, which takes place with film sessions, theater, workshops, music and debates, has the objective of "reinforcing the need to talk about mental health and illness in the public space".
After several editions addressing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the festival proposes to reflect on mental health in the media and in the music sector, as well as the impact of bureaucracy on people's mental health.
The program, announced today, includes the screening of the film "Listen" (2020), by Ana Rocha de Sousa, about a family entangled in the bureaucracy of British social services because of child custody.

The film is the starting point for talking about mental health and bureaucracy, with a debate with the participation of psychologists Henda Vieira-Lopes and Liliana Dias, director Ana Rocha de Sousa and Isabel Passarinho, from the National Coordination of Mental Health Policies.
On mental health and music, the starting point is the film "Tár" (2022), by Todd Field, with a debate moderated by journalist Lia Pereira and attended by music therapist Ana Franganito, psychologist Cheila Rocha, composer Maria Picas and Sara Baía, from the Order of Psychologists.
The festival will also screen the film "Nightcrawler" (2014), by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, about the limits of journalism, in a thematic session on mental health and 'media', with a debate moderated by journalist Florbela Godinho.
On mental health and relationships, the festival proposes the documentary "Un bolso lleno de carteras" (2021), by Leonardo Petralia, and a debate with Paulo Bastos (journalist), Rita Sepúlveda (researcher), Tânia Graça (psychologist and sexologist) and Vanessa Damásio (psychologist).
A Dance Movement Therapy workshop and a concert by The Ziguais, a band founded by an association that supports people with autism and their families, are other highlights of this edition, which ends on May 25th.
The Mental Festival, produced by the non-profit association Safe Space Portugal, will take place at the São Jorge Cinema, Espaço Atmosfera M and in the Quinta das Conchas park.
