Many people think that succulents, like cacti, don’t need frequent watering, but in reality, they shouldn’t be left completely dry. For example, “an underwatered succulent will have wrinkled or deflated leaves or stems,” explains Justin Hancock, a horticulturist, as quoted on Martha Stewart’s website.
Is that what’s happening to yours? When the soil is completely dry, you should “add water slowly to help the soil absorb it,” the expert explains.
In general, the soil in many “cacti and succulent pots is hydrophobic, meaning that when it dries out, it repels water rather than absorbing it.”
This means that adding water gradually “will allow it to soak in rather than running right through.”
