Volunteers' information was grouped into three life expectancy categories, taking into account genetic data: long (20.1%), intermediate (60.1%) and short (19.8%). The data were also classified into three lifestyle score categories, including favourable (23.1%), intermediate (55.6%) and unfavourable (21.3%). Those with high genetic risks, such as a family history of hereditary disease, had a 21% higher risk of dying before age 75.
Still, those who followed healthy lifestyles were able to offset their genetic inheritance in two to three cases. On the other hand, people who were sedentary and had a poor diet were 78% more likely to die prematurely, even if they did not have a high genetic risk.
According to the researchers, the results are better if the changes are implemented before the age of 40. "At age 40, participants with high genetic risk could prolong life expectancy by an estimated 5.22 years with a favourable lifestyle. Given that behavioural lifestyle habits are generally developed before middle age, it is crucial to raise awareness among individuals with high genetic risk to prolong their life expectancy before this age," they state in the article.
