Shortness of breath, fatigue and swollen lower limbs are some of the symptoms of heart failure. According to the Lusíadas group's 'website', this is a disease prevalent in the elderly and affects 10% of the population over 70 years of age. This Friday, May 3, marks European Heart Failure Day. It is part of the European week also dedicated to the same theme.
"This disease occurs when the heart's contraction or relaxation is not effective, which means that there is not enough blood being pumped out of the heart," reveals the 'website'.

In this same article, cardiologist Nuno Antunes explains how you can reduce the risk of developing this pathology. "Since most cases are the result of the negative effect of cardiovascular risk factors, its prevention involves early monitoring and strict control of these risk factors from the moment they are detected," he explains.
Some of these include diabetes, hypertension and smoking. To this end, he also recommends a healthy diet, physical exercise and appropriate medication.
