Inflammation is a natural reaction of the body against aggressions to which we are exposed daily, such as viruses or bacteria. When our immune system is unable to overcome these threats, the degree of inflammation can become chronic and is more likely to get sick.
To prevent this from happening, nutritionist Davineé Lingo advised adopting a diet rich in colorful vegetables, such as beets. The benefits are many since this food contains a pigment - betalain - responsible for its color. It is a phytochemical with a powerful antioxidant action.

"Betalains have been shown to reduce several markers of inflammation, decrease the production of pro-inflammatory free radicals, and protect the body from harmful substances called xenobiotics," the nutritionist told the EatingWell portal, referring to the findings of a study published by Human Nutrition & Metabolism.
Specializing in intestinal health, Davineé Lingo said that beets are a source of dietary nitrates, "natural compounds that the body converts into nitric oxide, an important chemical messenger that helps dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow".
