Habits that help prevent constipation:
- Move more. "Movement is key to alleviating constipation — walking, exercising, and stretching all help the bowels move as they should," she says;
- Eat a healthy diet. That means focusing on fiber-rich foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Adding more whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats can also help;
- Drink water. Staying hydrated helps prevent the problem. Most experts recommend that men aim to "drink about 15.5 cups of fluids a day, and women should try to drink about 11.5 cups of fluids a day";
- Avoid 'junk foods'. Unfortunately, they can make stools harder to pass. For example, "eating foods high in sugar and/or sodium has been linked to constipation," she adds.
