Soon, a visit to the doctor could reveal in minutes whether or not you're at risk of developing stomach cancer. A new study, to be presented in May at the Digestive Disease Week annual meeting in Washington, D.C., suggests that the diagnosis could be made with an oral rinse.

"We found that the oral microbiome and the stomach microbiome are linked, and knowing what bacteria are in the mouth tells us about the environment in the stomach," explained lead researcher Shruthi Reddy Perati in a press release quoted by United Press International.

The study compared samples from 30 people diagnosed with stomach cancer, 30 at high risk for it and 38 healthy controls. The researchers found little difference in the bacteria in the mouths of people with the disease versus those at risk.

"The ideal time to try to prevent cancer is when it's on the verge of transformation. We were able to identify people who had precancerous conditions. As a screening and prevention tool, this has huge potential."

The findings are still preliminary. The researchers say they plan to conduct larger studies.
