Sleeping with a fan on during hot nights may seem like a great idea. However, it is a very unhealthy habit. More specifically, fans "don't pose serious risks overnight, but they can cause mildly irritating symptoms for some people," explains Raj Dasgupta, MD, on Healthline

Four negative effects of sleeping with a fan on: 

  • Causing congestion. "Unfortunately, the airflow from a fan can dry out your nose, throat, and mouth. This can lead to excess mucus production, causing headaches, nasal congestion, sore throats, or even snoring"; 
  • Worsening allergies. It is possible that "fans can circulate dust and pollen in the air, which can trigger allergies for some people"; 
  • Getting dry eyes and skin. Moisturizing your skin and using lubricating eye drops can help prevent these symptoms; 
  • Muscle pain. In general, "concentrated airflow can cause muscle tension or cramps".
