Got a narcissistic friend, colleague, or partner? Communicating with these types of individuals can feel like an uphill battle, leaving you feeling confused, frustrated, and disoriented, explains Julia Baird, a psychologist, as quoted in Prevention.

In case you're not familiar, "narcissism refers to a set of personality traits that include grandiosity, a need for admiration, a lack of empathy, an inflated sense of self-importance, a sense of entitlement, and a preoccupation with success," she explains.

To deal with these types of people, the expert recommends something quite simple: "Always remember who you're dealing with." She also suggests trying not to get caught up in their negative emotions. In other words, "set firm boundaries to protect yourself," she explains.

It's not safe to be vulnerable around a narcissist. These are individuals who "see vulnerability as weakness and will find ways to use it against you."

Michelle Turk, a marriage and family therapist, as quoted in the same magazine, explains that it's important to "stand up for yourself while remaining calm and composed during interactions." It's crucial to always prioritize self-care and build a support system with friends and family.

Additionally, she says that seeking "professional support can help you navigate relationships with those who have narcissistic traits."
