For some people, sexual pleasure can be a real headache. Writing in The Conversation, Professor of Neuropharmacology Colin Davidson, from the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, says that primary headache associated with sexual activity (PHASA) is defined as having at least two episodes of head or neck pain after sex.
Davidson explains that the pain can build gradually during sexual activity, or become more severe just before or during orgasm. PHASA can be severe and last anything from a minute to 24 hours.

The reasons why these headaches happen are not fully understood. However, it is known that high blood pressure is a risk factor for PHASA, suggesting that the pain may be linked to a sudden increase in blood pressure.
In the same article, the professor also says that these headaches are two to four times more common in men than women. It is estimated that the condition – also known as sex headache, coital headache, orgasmic headache and coital cephalgia – affects between 1% and 1.6% of the population at some point in their lives. However, the true figure could be higher. Many cases go unreported because of the stigma surrounding the topic.
