Spending time outdoors can instantly improve anyone’s mood. But are there other benefits? Experts, as cited by blog aggregator Huffpost, say there are many more for both your physical and mental health. What are they? Check out the list.
Surprising benefits of being outdoors:
- You get more vitamin D. In general, “direct sunlight exposure helps the body produce this vitamin. This essential nutrient promotes bone health and has been linked to the prevention of several autoimmune and chronic diseases,” say the experts at Usay Compare;
- It can reduce stress and anxiety. “Being outdoors in natural light can be helpful if you have seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression that affects people during certain seasons or times of the year,” explains mental health charity Mind;
- It can improve cognitive function, particularly in areas such as concentration, problem-solving and creativity;
- It can improve your sleep. According to a 2021 study, as cited by Huffpost, time spent outdoors in the morning can improve sleep quality, while less time spent outdoors can harm overall sleep quality.
