A study carried out by Prevent Breast Cancer, and published in the Journal of Mammary Gland Biology and Neoplasia, has presented a discovery that could be the basis for new breast cancer treatments.

The research showed that it is possible to preserve breast tissue outside the body for at least a week. This way, it could be an important step for scientists to identify the most effective treatments and medications for each patient.

"Not all drugs work for all women. This new approach means we can start to determine which drugs will work for individual women by measuring their impact on living tissue," revealed doctor Hannah Harrison to The Guardian.

"It means women could be given the drug that is most effective for their particular genetic make-up," she continues. The preservation of breast tissue was achieved thanks to a gel.

"By testing different hydrogel formulations, we were able to find one that preserved human breast tissue for at least a week. We can better test drugs for both preventing and treating cancer, and we can examine how factors such as breast density affect response to particular hormones."

According to the Portuguese League Against Cancer, around seven thousand new cases of breast cancer are detected in Portugal. It is the most common type of cancer among women and is even considered the leading cause of death from cancer in women.
