In case you didn’t know, most autoimmune diseases are chronic illnesses, meaning they have no cure. But there are very effective treatments capable of slowing down or preventing serious complications. It is important to start treatments as early as possible and, of course, knowing how to recognize the most common symptoms can help.

Taking this into account, doctors, quoted in Self, listed some of the ones that many ignore or simply do not know about and explained everything. Read carefully.

Autoimmune disease symptoms that many ignore or don’t know about:

  • You are always very tired or with the feeling that you are sick. As most autoimmune diseases cause a generalized and chronic inflammation, “the body works hard to create a response and fight infections, but this inflammation can cause fatigue”, explains Roshini Rajapaksa, a gastroenterologist;
  • You feel inexplicable pain and/or swelling in your muscles and joints. Unfortunately, “an unstable immune system often ‘chases’ certain parts of the body and, for many people, this inflammation settles in certain joints”;
  • Skin rashes or other strange skin problems. It is something that happens in conditions such as psoriasis, a “very common disease that causes skin cells to multiply too quickly, resulting in scaly skin, often on the scalp, knees or elbows”;
  • You have bowel problems. “When they are recurrent, they can sometimes mean that your immune system is going into attack mode in your digestive system”;
  • You have difficulty processing information, frequent headaches or vision problems. “When the immune system attacks the nervous system (as is the case with multiple sclerosis), it can cause some quite disturbing neurological effects”, explains Lindsay McAlpine, a neurologist. Studies suggest that this disease can also make you prone to chronic migraines or frequent headaches, she adds.
