Is it really important to poop every day? If you don’t, should you be worried? NBC’s TODAY spoke with a gastroenterologist to get the scoop.
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. “Everybody’s GI tract is different,” said Dr. Anju Malieckal. Several factors can affect how often you go No. 2, including your age, lifestyle, diet and stress levels.

“It can be anywhere from multiple times a day to once a day to every two to three days,” she said. “As we get older, our metabolism slows down. So the time it takes for stool to move through our intestines, the transit time, is going to be longer.”
More important than going every day is how your poop looks and feels when you do go. She said it should be a medium brown color, smooth and not too firm. “If you feel nice and empty and relieved and there’s no straining or pain, that’s a good sign,” she said.
Otherwise, it could be a sign that something’s off. “If you’re feeling bloated or gassy or uncomfortable, or you’re feeling sluggish, that also could be your body telling you that things aren’t moving as well as they should be,” she said.
