Unfortunately, "cervical cancer can be a little bit insidious," Monica Avila, a gynecologic oncologist, tells Self. Why? Certain symptoms are easily mistaken for normal period problems.  With that in mind, the expert—with the help of Diana Pearre, another gynecologic oncologist—outlined the symptoms that might fly under the radar. Read on, and take note.  SEE ALSO: Nova forma de detetar HPV pode ser a esperança contra cancro comum (Portuguese version) Cervical Cancer Signs That Might Go Unnoticed:
  • Pain or bleeding during or after sex. There are "lots of benign reasons why this could be happening, but it's something to bring up with your doctor—especially if it's new," says Pearre.
  • Super-irregular periods. "That tends to be one of the more common presenting symptoms." So, be "aware of any weird bleeding patterns, especially if your period goes away and then all of a sudden you're soaking through pads."
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge. When someone with advanced cervical cancer has discharge, it's not subtle, she says. "It's very foul smelling."
  • Bladder and bowel problems. "I see a lot of patients [with cervical cancer] who have to pee a lot more frequently or who have trouble starting to pee," says Avila.
  • Pain and swelling in random body parts. You might start to experience pain in your pelvis, back, abdomen, or legs. When women have these pains, "coupled with other symptoms like abnormal bleeding, it definitely warrants at least a pelvic exam," says Pearre.
