Never suspected that this could be a sign of nail polish allergy

Itching and irritation on your eyelids could indicate that you suffer from nail polish allergy. A study published in the Brazilian Annals of Dermatology revealed that nail polishes are responsible for about 36% of the cases of allergic contact dermatitis that occur on the eyelids.
Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease. It arises due to contact with an external agent and, although it is not a contagious or even dangerous pathology, it can be bothersome and interfere with the quality of life of those who suffer from it.

"Most of the time, the reaction does not occur immediately", explains dermatologist Mariana de Figueiredo Silva Hafner, from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in Brazil, and author of the study. Therefore, "people do not always make a direct association" between the symptoms and the disease. The main symptom, she explains, is itching, "which causes great discomfort".
"Traditionally, women tend to be more affected by contact dermatitis because they are more exposed to beauty products", says the specialist, emphasizing that, on average, women use 12 cosmetic products per day. All things considered, this means that the skin is in contact with about 168 different chemical components.
"Sometimes, we do not realize that we put our hands on our face and this causes indirect contact of the face with allergens present on the hands, such as those in nail polishes, which ends up causing dermatitis on the eyelid", she says. The dermatologist warns: "The clinical manifestation can be both localized and not very intense, as well as, in some cases, disseminated, in which people become entirely red and may even be hospitalized. If an investigation is not carried out to determine what the allergen is, the patient will not be able to get rid of the problem".
