The study followed 3,533 people for an average of about three years. The patients were split into two groups: one took a placebo, and the other was given a weekly injection of 1 milligram of semaglutide (the highest dose of Ozempic). Among those taking the drug, there was a 24% reduction in the risk of major kidney events and death from cardiovascular or renal causes, compared with those taking the placebo.

For Dr. Vlado Perkovic, who led the study, the findings offer new hope to millions of patients worldwide. "These benefits translate into a profound clinical impact, saving the lives of patients with diabetes. Furthermore, the safety findings are reassuring, with no major side effects, further supporting the value of semaglutide in this population," the expert said in a press release.
The research was funded by Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, a drug approved to treat type 2 diabetes. The trial included only European patients, a fact that has been questioned by some experts.
