Don’t know how to tackle the clutter? “When the sea of stuff starts to feel overwhelming, take a deep breath and remind yourself that no matter how much clutter there is, there are only five categories of items in any room: trash, dishes, laundry, things that have a home, and things that don’t,” says therapist and author KC Davis to Self. 

According to the expert, by dealing with each of these categories individually, the mess will seem a lot less intimidating. Want to give it a try? First, you’ll want to gather all the trash into one bag. Leave it by the door so it’s out of sight.

Put the dirty dishes in the sink and the dirty laundry in the hamper. Next, the expert explains that simply organizing the clutter can help motivate you. Then, finally, start “putting away all the items that do have a home.” 

Of course, you’ll be left with the things that don’t have a designated spot in your home, and this is where you’ll have to do a bit of a mental exercise. “You can either spend some time finding permanent homes for these items,” or set them aside in a basket, bag, or bin for another day. 

Once you’ve done this, you can (and should) take out the trash, do the dishes, and put away the laundry. It’s a simple method, but it can “alleviate the decision fatigue of trying to pick up each item and make a series of individual choices about it.”
