"You are what you eat," or so the saying goes, and there is growing evidence to support this claim. This time, nutritionists and neurologists from the Universities of Illinois and Nebraska in the United States set out to discover which nutrients slow down brain aging and prevent dementia.
The results of the study, published in the journal Nature, are conclusive. "By measuring the blood of the volunteers, we saw evidence of the large body of research showing the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes foods rich in these beneficial nutrients," explains neuroscientist Aron Barbey, one of the study's lead authors, on the University of Nebraska website. For the researcher, confirming what had previously only been suggested in studies using questionnaires only served to consolidate the idea that the Mediterranean diet and more natural foods are extremely beneficial for brain health.

The research involved 100 healthy participants aged between 65 and 75. All volunteers had to fill out a questionnaire with demographic information, body measurements, and fitness levels. After a period of fasting, blood tests were performed to analyze the presence of 13 nutritional biomarkers present in the body for a long time. The participants also underwent cognitive assessments and magnetic resonance imaging scans. All this on the same day.

The blood of participants with slow aging was replete with fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E, carotenoids, and choline. Fish, fruit, nuts, carrots, and eggs are some of the foods that contain these nutrients in their composition.

It should be noted that dementia is a generic term used to designate a group of diseases characterized by cognitive changes that may be associated with memory loss, language impairment, and disorientation in time or space. There is no treatment for most of them. However, it has been proven that about 40% of dementia, such as Alzheimer's (the most common form of dementia), can be prevented or delayed.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are 47.5 million people with dementia worldwide, a number that could reach 75.6 million by 2030 and almost triple by 2050, to 135.5 million.
