Rice is one of those foods that has a special place at the Portuguese table. Even so, there are those who choose to eliminate this grain from their meals because they believe it is not ideal for a healthy diet. However, nutritionist Laura Ligos believes that there is no reason to demonize rice.

"Rice can be an affordable and convenient carbohydrate. We should stop demonizing it and instead help people understand the best way to consume it,” said the specialist in an interview with the health and wellness portal EatingWell.

Nutritionist Roxana Ehsani, who has a master's degree in clinical nutrition and dietetics from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States, revealed that those who eat rice every day have more energy. "Healthy and rich in nutrients, rice is an excellent source of carbohydrates, one of the three macronutrients that we need to consume daily," she said.

And there's more. Daily consumption of rice also provides better digestion. As such, it is recommended for those who suffer from nausea, vomiting and stomach problems. "Plain rice is easy to tolerate and digest. It is also low in fat, making it ideal for facilitating digestion," explained Ehsani.

Nutritionist Lauren Harris-Pincus said that rice provides "more than 15 essential vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, selenium, fiber, iron and zinc".

However, nutritionist Laura Ligos warns: "If you are not active or do not eat enough protein and fat to accompany the rice, this can negatively affect the glycemic index". Eating rice every day can also increase the level of arsenic, a chemical compound naturally present in the soil and water of some parts of the world.

It should be noted that the World Health Organization has already warned that exposure to arsenic is associated with an increased risk of cancer over time. Therefore, nutritionists recommend washing the rice before cooking and consuming it.
