Richard Restak, a neurologist, recently released a book titled 'How To Prevent Dementia', and as quoted in the blog aggregator Huffpost, suggests that there are "two sets of questions that anyone can use to screen for the possible onset of any type of dementia".
How so? According to the specialist, "once we reach adulthood, our behavior acquires a regularity and predictability" that is easy to recognize, especially for our loved ones.
And, usually, "Alzheimer's disease, as well as other dementias represent disruptions in that regularity and predictability".

So, the first set of questions includes: "is the person showing a change in their usual behavior? Have they recently started having memory difficulties? Is there a noticeable change in their usual behavior?" He also explains that "dramatic or out-of-character behavior is always suspect because, as mentioned, most people in adulthood have established a distinct behavioral repertoire".
The second set of questions includes: "if the answer to any of the above questions is yes, does this change in behavior interfere with daily life, especially in relationships with others?" According to the specialist, "repetitive speech and emotionally excessive expressions (yelling or even more aggressive behaviors, including physical outbursts) rarely increase in frequency during normal aging".
If the answer to all (or almost all) of the questions is yes, "it is highly likely that this is dementia or a psychiatric illness (most likely major depression)".
It is, above all, important to be attentive to your loved ones and, of course, consult a doctor whenever necessary.
