At least 32 dead, over 40,000 displaced by Kenya rains
At least 32 people have died and more than 40,000 have been displaced since the end of March due to heavy rains in Kenya, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said today.

In a report based on data from the Red Cross and Kenyan authorities, OCHA said that at least “32 people have died, 15 injured and two are missing” as of April 18 because of the heavy rains that have caused the flooding.

Some 103,485 people have been affected, including 40,265 people displaced across 21 of the country’s 47 counties.
More than 960 livestock have died and 24,010 acres (9,716.5 hectares) of farmland have been destroyed by the rising waters.
“Damage to schools, water sources and major roads has also been reported,” OCHA said.
Areas most prone to flooding include western Kenya along Lake Victoria and rivers in Homa Bay, Siaya, Busia, Nyando, Nyakach and Muhoroni, and low-lying areas in the southern counties of Narok, Kajiado and Mombasa.
Flooding is also likely in highland areas traditionally prone to landslides, especially in the counties of Makueni (south), Nyeri (central), Muranga and West Pokot (west).
“Communities living in flood-prone areas have been advised to move to higher ground,” the UN agency stressed.
These incidents come after the El Niño weather phenomenon – a shift in atmospheric patterns caused by a warming of the Pacific Ocean – brought flash floods that killed more than 170 people late last year, as well as flooding in low-lying plains, overflowing rivers, landslides, loss of livestock, and destruction of crops and infrastructure in the country.
These floods follow the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in four decades, which caused water shortages that brought Somalia to the brink of famine and left 6.6 million people facing acute food insecurity, according to the UN.
The rainy season in the country is expected to last through May.
