Spain reached, on Wednesday, a new record of transplants performed in a single day. In total, there were 48 organ transplants performed in 24 hours, 10 more than the last milestone achieved in the country.
The Spanish Ministry of Health said that the effort of hundreds of professionals was essential, as well as the gesture of 17 families who agreed to donate the organs "at the tragic moment of losing a loved one". The families were joined by two living people who also donated an organ on Wednesday, according to La Voz de Galicia.
Of the 48 transplants performed, 25 were kidneys, 11 livers, seven lungs, three hearts and two pancreases. One of the transplants was performed on a patient in critical condition and who was at imminent risk of death if the transplant was not performed in time.
Among the people who received transplants were three children and a patient who was on a list of patients with enormous difficulty in receiving organs, due to their immunological characteristics.
Six private planes were mobilized to transport the organs, and the collaboration of two commercial flights from Iberia and Vueling was also requested.
In 2023, 5,863 organ transplants were performed in Spain. The country has been leading the world in organ donation for more than three decades.
