A military official and an Iraqi Interior Ministry official failed to identify who was behind the airstrike that targeted the Calso base in Babylon province, the France-Presse Agency (AFP) reported.
The sources also could not immediately confirm whether the attack was carried out by drones. The Interior Ministry official said the attack caused "one dead and eight wounded" among the forces at the military base. The military official, for his part, reported three wounded among Iraqi soldiers. "There are explosions in the warehouses housing the equipment because of the bombing," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "A fire is still raging in some areas and the search for the wounded continues," he added. The Interior Ministry source said the attack targeted the Hachd al-Shaabi Armored Vehicles Directorate. "The explosion affected equipment, weapons, vehicles," he said. Iraqi security sources quoted by the Efe agency said the attack took place at the Calsu base, about 80 kilometers south of the Iraqi capital, which hosts fighters from the Popular Mobilization Forces of Iraq, as well as Iraqi soldiers and police. Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, following the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on Israeli territory on October 7. According to the American media, Israel launched several missiles against the Iranian province of Isfahan on Friday morning. But Iran denied the attack: first, it said that the anti-aircraft defense had shot down several drones, and then that there had been "several flying objects" in Isfahan, where the country's nuclear facilities are located. Meanwhile, anonymous sources quoted by the Jerusalem Post said that today's attack should be interpreted as a warning to Tehran about Israel's offensive capabilities and as a sign that Israel does not want a regional war. The Israeli forces' offensive is a response to the Iranian attack on Israel on April 13, with about 300 missiles and drones, 99% of which were intercepted by the country's anti-aircraft defense, according to Israeli authorities. Tehran, in turn, retaliated against the deadly Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month. Hashd al-Shaabi is an integral part of the official Iraqi security apparatus placed under the authority of the Prime Minister. But this institution brings together several pro-Iranian armed factions, some of which have also carried out attacks, in Iraq and Syria, against American soldiers deployed as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition.
