Yeremin, 42, died on Friday night after being hit by a Ukrainian drone, according to Izvestia.
"He died as a result of injuries sustained after a drone strike. The journalist was carrying out his professional duties," Izvestia said in a statement cited by Spanish news agency EFE. Izvestia received Yeremin's last report on Wednesday, which was published the following day on the Telegram channel. Yeremin had been covering the fighting in Ukraine since the start of the Russian military offensive in February 2022, including operations in Mariupol and Marinka, both in the Donetsk region. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called it a "bloody crime" by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's regime. "We regard this cold-blooded murder of a journalist as yet another confirmation of the ugly terrorist nature of the Zelensky regime," Zakharova was quoted as saying on the Izvestia website. Zakharova accused Kyiv of having launched "a real hunt for representatives of the Russian media, military officers and public figures who, with their reports, comments and publications, reveal the truth to the world community." Denis Pushilin, the leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, also expressed condolences over the war reporter's death. In July 2023, Rostislav Zhuravliov, a war correspondent for Russia's state-run RIA Novosti news agency, was also killed in Zaporizhzhia when the car he was travelling in was hit. Three other Russian reporters were wounded in the attack, which happened as they were travelling between the town of Vasilyevka and the village of Vladimirivka. The International Federation of Journalists said that as of Friday, 17 journalists and media workers had been killed worldwide so far this year. The ongoing war in Ukraine was triggered by Russia's invasion of its neighbour on February 24, 2022. The number of civilian and military casualties is not known, but various sources, including the UN, have said it is likely to be high.
