The earthquake struck at 10:40 local time (03:40 Lisbon time) in the Pacific Ocean, 55.9 kilometers southeast of the eastern city of Hualien, at a depth of 30 kilometers, according to the Efe agency.
The quake was felt throughout the island of Taiwan and in the Pescadores Islands, being stronger in the counties of Hualien, Taitung (east), Nantou (center) and Changhua (west).
This earthquake was followed shortly afterwards by another of magnitude 4.6 off the coast of northern Hualien County, at a depth of 24.8 kilometers.
Although no fatalities or significant material damage have been reported, the earthquake caused rockfalls on several sections of a highway, forcing the sending of machinery to clear the road.
On April 3, Hualien County was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, the strongest recorded in Taiwan in the past 25 years, causing 17 deaths, 1,100 injuries and significant damage to the region's tourism and education sectors.
Since then, the CWA has recorded about 1,000 aftershocks of varying magnitude, today's being the strongest since April 3.
Taiwan is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", the seismic fault line that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and where most of the world's earthquakes occur.
