The Israeli military has confirmed that nine soldiers and a Border Police officer were injured during the operation near the city of Tulkarem, with their condition ranging from light to serious.

Although Palestinian sources, citing family members, reported the death of a local leader of Islamic Jihad, Muhamad Jaber, known as Abu Shuja, on Friday, the militant appeared in images released in recent hours by the local press at the funerals of the victims of the Israeli operation.

According to local Palestinian sources, the deceased were between 16 and 39 years old and their bodies were carried in a procession from the Martyr Thabet Thabet Hospital to the cemetery.

Israel estimates that there are 15 detainees, while the Palestinian Prisoners' Club estimates that around 50 have been detained, although many have been released in recent hours after questioning.

Palestinians living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem began a strike today in protest against Israel's recent military operation in the refugee camp.

The strike, called by the Fatah movement of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, covers activities in schools, universities, shops, banks and businesses, as well as all public transport routes, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The occupied West Bank is experiencing its greatest spiral of violence since the Second Intifada (2000-2005) and in these first four months of 2024 alone at least 138 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, most of them alleged militants or aggressors, but also civilians, including around 30 minors, according to a count by the EFE agency.

The army stepped up its already frequent incursions into the West Bank after the attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on 7 October 2023 in Israel - triggering the current war in the Gaza Strip - and since then, around 468 Palestinians have died in violent incidents with Israeli troops or settlers.

On Friday, the European Union imposed sanctions on four people and two organisations accused of human rights violations in the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, and the United States did the same in relation to two entities involved in fundraising for extremist settlers already sanctioned and accused of regularly attacking Palestinians.
