"Year after year, Pakistani children are caught in a cycle of droughts and floods" and face "an extremely high risk of the impacts of the climate crisis," said Abdullah Fadil, the UN agency's representative in Pakistan.

According to the latest figures from Pakistani authorities, at least 74 people have died across several provinces as a result of incessant rains that began more than a week ago.

"So far, 15 people have died due to rain and 10 others injured" in the southwestern province of Balochistan, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority said in its latest situation report, adding that no rain was expected over the next two days.

In the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the death toll has risen to 59, according to the provincial disaster management authority.

"It brings back memories of the devastating tragedy of 2022, when 500 children lost their lives in the southern (province of) Sindh… I saw first-hand how children were malnourished, and what little they had was washed away, including schools, hopes and futures," Fadil said.

Pakistan is among the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, and rainfall often causes extensive damage, particularly during the monsoon season and winter, in areas where infrastructure is poor and mud-brick houses are common.

In March, 53 people, including 30 children, died and 65 were injured in heavy rains that lashed different parts of the country, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands.

At least 1,700 people died during the devastating floods of 2022, which also displaced eight million people.
