The airport had been closed since Thursday due to volcanic activity at Mount Ruang, located in northern Indonesia.
On Saturday, Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency lowered the volcano's alert level from four, the second highest, to three, but warned that residents should still stay at least four kilometers away from the mountain.
More than 3,000 people have been evacuated since Thursday due to the risk of ash, falling rocks, hot volcanic clouds and a possible tsunami.
The danger remains with the possibility of smaller eruptions, which could trigger landslides and other damage in the immediate area around the volcano.
Authorities reopened the airport after satellite images showed that rain had washed away volcanic ash that had covered the runway.
Indonesia, an archipelago of 270 million people, has 120 active volcanoes.
Indonesia is prone to volcanic activity because it sits along the "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean.
A remote volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted again on Friday, just days after volcanic activity there forced the evacuation of several thousand villagers on a nearby island, the international press reported.
