Aharon Haliva, the head of Israel’s military intelligence, has become the first senior Israeli figure to resign over the Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and led to the capture of 250 others who are still being held in Gaza six months after the end of Israel’s military campaign.

Shortly after the attack in October 2023, Haliva took “full responsibility” for failing to prevent the Hamas attack.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the chief of staff had accepted Haliva’s resignation and thanked him for his service.

The resignation could pave the way for other top Israeli security officials to take responsibility for failing to prevent the attack and to step down.
