Mahir Behlulovic is seven years old and the only pupil at a school in Petrovici, a mountain village in central Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The area was once home to around 300 people, but now fewer than a dozen remain.

This is a legacy of the country's devastating 1992-95 war.

The local school closed down for years, but reopened in 2022 when Mahir turned six, the age at which children start school, and a teacher was hired.

Each day, the boy's mother helps him pack his schoolbag and walks with him to the schoolhouse. There, he has the undivided attention of his teacher -- something that will change when he moves on to fifth grade.

At that point, local authorities are supposed to provide transportation so that he can continue his education in the nearest town.

Until then, there are the memories of this unique experience, captured by Getty Images and presented in the photo gallery above.
