Four German citizens were caught by Austrian police placing white roses at the house where Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, in the north of the country. According to the news agency The Associated Press (AP), the aim was to pay tribute to the Nazi dictator on the day he was born.

Police in the Upper Austria region revealed that four Germans - two sisters and their respective partners, aged between 20 and 30 - went to the site on Saturday, 20 April, to place white roses in the window. They then posed for a photograph in front of the house and one of the women made the Nazi salute.

The Germans were intercepted and taken to a police station for questioning. The woman who made the Nazi salute claimed that it was a joke, but the officers said they had found conversations on her mobile phone in which she shared messages and photographs with Nazi themes.

The case will be reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of violating the Austrian law that prohibits Nazi symbols.

It should be noted that Hitler was born on 20 April 1889 and the house where he was born is undergoing renovation to be transformed into a police station.
