Of the 1,066 consortia of institutions that competed, 128 proposals were selected for financing, five of which were led by Portuguese institutions, a source from Iscte -- Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, one of the winners, revealed to Lusa.

In addition to Iscte, a project from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, two from Universidade do Minho and one from Universidade de Coimbra were also selected, institutions that will work in a consortium with at least two other institutions from two other countries, according to the rules.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks are an instrument of Horizon Europe that aims to finance international doctoral programmes, requiring consortium work that connects institutions from several countries.

In recent years, the funding raised by Portuguese institutions has been increasing: "In 2021, €6.61 million was raised, in 2022 it rose to €7.91 million and now to €12.09 million", highlighted ISCTE, which will lead the consortium for the first time, having received three million euros.

The project led by Iscte will include five other universities -- from Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, and Israel -- and four industry and research partners, with the aim of developing an optical fibre with greater capacity, lower costs and reduced energy consumption.

"The new generation of optical fibre will reduce costs, reduce energy consumption and significantly increase the capacity of communications networks by more than ten times, while remaining as compatible as possible with the current infrastructure", says Adolfo Cartaxo, lecturer and researcher at Iscte and coordinator of this doctoral network.
