A woman is to receive compensation of €3.3 million after being run over on a crosswalk outside Madrid, Spain. The accident, which occurred in 2016, caused serious brain damage to the victim, requiring her to receive 24-hour care.

According to the Spanish news agency Efe, the driver was sentenced to six months in prison and a further six months' ban on driving cars and mopeds, in addition to having to pay the compensation of €3.3 million through the insurance company.

This is the largest compensation received by a victim of a traffic accident in Spain and it is also the first time that the amount has exceeded the three million euro mark, explained the woman's lawyer, Manuel Castellanos Piccirilli.

The case dates back to 14 September 2016, when the victim, a domestic worker, was going to collect her employer's baby son from a location in Madrid and was run over when she was crossing the crosswalk.

The driver did not reduce speed when approaching the crosswalk and ran over the woman, who was thrown 18 metres. According to the sentence, the victim suffered serious injuries and was admitted to an intensive care unit for several weeks.

The woman, currently 32 years old, suffered serious brain damage, requiring the help of third parties to carry out all her daily activities. She also needs to attend constant medical check-ups and undergo physiotherapy and therapy for the rest of her life.
