Therapy dogs have been 'recruited' as a key part of efforts to boost morale among patients on an intensive care unit (ICU) at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, Spain.

Patient Joel Bueno, 34, could not contain his tears of joy as the four-legged visitors entered the intensive care unit where he was being treated for a blood clot.

For him, the affection shown by therapy dogs Vida and Lu reminded him of his own pet.

"It's great to have someone who loves you more than anything in the world. They give you everything, no matter how you are with them," Joel told Reuters with a broad smile.

The visits are part of a programme by Hospital del Mar and the Affinity Foundation, which specialises in pet therapy, to improve the emotional well-being of ICU patients.

Patients receive two weekly visits, each lasting 15 to 20 minutes.

"For the moment it's just a perception, but it seems to us that there is a benefit for patients," Lucia Picazo, a doctor on the unit, told Reuters.

Joel has no (such) doubts about the benefits, saying that simply hearing that dogs might visit gave him an instant morale boost.

The project will analyse saliva samples from patients, taken before and after a session, to see whether stress markers decrease and well-being markers increase.

And it's not just the patients who benefit. According to one of the project leaders, many of the healthcare professionals working on the ICU enjoy having the dogs around and form bonds with them.
