Lawyers for former U.S. President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty for their client today, arguing that the prosecution should never have brought the case in the first place.

In opening statements for Trump’s trial, prosecutors argued that the former president “orchestrated a criminal scheme to defraud” the 2016 presidential election.

Defense attorneys have said Trump is innocent, adding that the Manhattan district attorney’s office “should never have brought this case.”

A jury of New Yorkers — 12 jurors and six alternates — was seated last Friday after four days of jury selection and began hearing testimony Monday in what is the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president.

Trump is accused of falsifying business records as part of an alleged scheme to hush up stories that he believed could damage his 2016 presidential campaign.

At the heart of the charges is a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen to keep her from discussing an alleged extramarital affair with the businessman.

Prosecutors say Trump hid the true nature of the payment by falsifying business records.

The former president has denied having a sexual encounter with Daniels, and his lawyers have argued that the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses, pleading not guilty to 10 criminal counts related to falsifying business records.

One of Donald Trump’s defense attorneys focused his opening statement on trying to discredit one of the prosecution’s star witnesses: Michael Cohen.

Attorney Todd Blanche gave an extensive rundown of Cohen’s criminal history, including the fact that he has been convicted of lying to Congress.

Blanche accused Cohen of being “obsessed with the former president,” saying that “his financial well-being depends on destroying Mr. Trump’s reputation.

“You cannot make a serious decision about President Trump based on the word of Michael Cohen,” Blanche argued.

Anticipating the defense’s likely attacks on his star witness, prosecutor Matthew Colangelo acknowledged Cohen’s criminal history in his opening statement.

Defense attorneys have also argued that Trump was not involved in hush-money payments made to women in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

Blanche specifically disputed the prosecution’s suggestion that the payment to Stormy Daniels was made to influence the outcome of the presidential election.

“There is nothing wrong with trying to influence an election. That’s called democracy,” the lawyer said.
