Remains of pilot killed in World War II identified

The remains of a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot who was killed in action during World War II have been identified eight decades after his death.
The remains of Lt. John E. McLauchlen Jr. were identified in January and will be buried this summer at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the Associated Press reported.
McLauchlen was 25 when he died during a bombing mission on Dec. 1, 1943. After striking its target, the plane he was in was hit by anti-aircraft fire and its left wing caught fire.
The plane was last seen being pursued by three enemy aircraft, and the crew was declared missing in action. In 1947, remains believed to be those of the eight servicemen on the plane were recovered. The remains could not be identified at the time and were buried as unknowns.
In 2020, the remains that had been buried decades earlier were exhumed and sent to a lab for analysis, and one set was identified as belonging to John E. McLauchlen Jr..
